Women in the Trades is a program designed to encourage women to consider the good pay and benefits associated with the  union construction trades. The current construction environment lends itself to increased training of new union apprentices with an emphasis on women taking advantage of good entry level pay, regular increases, and pay equity often missing in other employment for women who have completed high school.

The SFPUC launched the $7B Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) in September with the extension of the PLA from the $4.5B Water System Improvement Program.  Preliminary work on SSIP began in 2014, and now, with the signing of the PLA extension, more projects will begin and the SE and Ocean Sewer Treatment Plants will gradually undergo major improvements over the next 15 years. With these, and other public and private construction work projected over the next 15-20 years, the environment is right to dramatically increase the number of tradeswomen in union construction.
