Library Volunteer Opportunities

Summer Youth Volunteers

Update: Most locations are currently at capacity. Please call to see if your location is able to accept volunteers at this time. If so, you can bring your application and proof of Covid vaccination to that location.

If you will be in Grade 8-12 next school year, can contribute at least 10 hours of helpful, kind service, and would like to gain experience for school and job applications, come join the Summer Youth Volunteer program, and help deliver an excellent Summer Stride for all of San Francisco!

FOG (Free Orton-Gillingham) Readers is a program provided by San Francisco Public Library to help struggling readers in grades 1-4 with trained tutors. All tutors go through 6 hours of training and one-time fingerprinting (at no cost). SFPL will prepare you to be an effective literacy tutor as well as provide follow-up help. For ages 15 and older.

Youth Engaged in Library Leadership (YELL) is a paid internship designed for older teens, requiring a weekly commitment over the summer to work collaboratively with their local Librarians, assist with STEM content creation and develop project-based youth led events. Go to to learn more.
